Time is running out for Borneo’s rainforest

Deforestation is a global problem, not only in tropical countries but all around the world. About 30% of the carbon we use is captured by boreal forests, but Borneo has the highest deforestation rate in the world. While politicians - usually focused on short-term economic issues - don’t give enough importance to this problem, Borneo’s biodiversity-rich forest is inexorably vanishing.

Seen from above, analysis of satellite images paint a frightening picture of Borneo. During the past twenty years, two millions acres were cleared annually. Industrial large-scale clearing of forests for monocrop agriculture such as palm oil and cattle grazing is the main cause of deforestation in this region. In addition, gold mining is causing an ecological disaster, polluting rivers and affecting the local people.

In Borneo and Sumatra, consequences of deforestation are dramatically impacting the local biodiversity and orangutans are one of the many victims. Powerless against human environmental dictatorship, some associations such as the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation, laid by Dr Willie Smits, have been fighting on their behalf.

The destruction of the Borneo rainforest may seem a world away from the urban comforts of industrialised civilisation, but raising their awareness about the importance of conservation is a major step towards a better future.

The long-term consequences of global deforestation would jeopardise life on Earth as we know it. What makes life sustainable on this planet is the many recycling processes involved. Cutting down trees remove natural fertilisers such as leaves and animal faeces and the consequence is a poorer quality of soil, which is the main cause of desertification. Forest destruction is damaging the ability of the earth to absorb carbon, and damaging these carbon sinks directly contributes to rising temperatures.

Many environmental groups such as DeforestAction are heavily involved in the fight against deforestation, and using the power of the web and the media, they develop collaborative projects with schools and young people from all over the planet.

The latest DeforestAction project will involve award-wining Brisbane company, Virgo Productions, to develop a 3D feature documentary and a TV series following ten young change makers in their fight to save orangutans and raise awareness about deforestation.

Project against deforestation in Borneo

I need your support for a deforestation project very close to my heart. I want to be selected for the projectACTION Borneo and be 1 of 10 activists to go to Borneo and be part of this global action project.

The goal is to create awareness about the destruction caused by deforestation, restore a full forest eco-system and provide a sustainable livelihood for the local community. The project will also create the world’s largest and most technology rich orangutan sanctuary on earth. There will be constant communication with schools and people from all around the world.

There will be a 3D feature documentary as well as a TV series about the project in collaboration with National Geographic Entertainment and they will be filming the 10 selected activists during 5 months from June 2011.

To be selected, I need to get as many votes as possible. You can help me by doing the following:

Make-up and homemade prosthetic masks

It’s always good fun to go to costume parties and I try to make my own mask or make-up most of the time. It is still very amateurish but I’ve just started to make prosthetic masks in a more profesionnal way.

This is the latest prosthetic mask I made for a “Future Party”. This tiem I’ve tried to be a bit more professional in the making of the mask. I made a plaster cast of my face and sculpted the mask on top of it. I then made a mold of the mask and used some latex and polyurethane for the metalic part. The next article will be a step-by-step of the making of the mask.

I made this Avatar face for a “Future party”. I made the nose in super-sculpey and then I used multiple layers of liquid latex on top of it. The rest is just basic blue body paint.

This one was for a “Jungle party” and I used some yellow contact lenses.

This make-up and prosthetic mask was used for an”Halloween party”. Same as the avatar mask, I made the volume of the eyebrows and the nose in super sculpey and then I used thin layers of liquid latex. Once dry, I used some cotton under the latex mask to keep some volume.

I used this costume twice, once for a “Pirate party” and the second time for a Barroque Ball where I won the best costume of the night.

I was wearing this costume for a Burlesque Ball during the 2010 Fringe Festival in Adelaide.

I had a bit of time last week to paint the sculpture. It was fun to play with the different textures in the clothing. I spent around 8 hours in total for the painting. I have enough of this one and can’t wait to start a new sculpture.

Young Elf

It’s been more than a year since the last sculpture…

Inspiration seems to be back so I got my clay out of the box and started making what will be a beautiful elf, at least I hope so.

The armature is in alluminium wire and she’s about 35cm tall, the maximum size I can fit in the oven. She had some flowers in her hair but they were burnt in the oven, it was 0.5cm too close to the top of my oven roof. I’m still struggling to make some nice wrinkles and folds in clothing so I decided to play it safe and give her some leather and strong fabric.

I bought some ’super sculpey firm’ (the gray bits) to experience the feel and I find it easier to work with for detail and texture. It was fun to make her look a bit precious and I can’t wait to paint her now she’s been baked. She will be holding a lantern in her right hand and I have to find her something to look at on the top of her left hand. Maybe an elephant…or not.

Time to make a new sculpture. I’ve just baked my black pin-up, added her eyes and made light shadows around her eyes and face and added a layer of varnish.

I haven’t been very productive the last month but here is new sculpture of a sexy black female character a made of fimo and super sculpey. She’s about 20cm tall.

I’ve tried to improve the her body shape and work a bit more on the muscles. I’ve also spent a bit more time smoothing the clay than usual.

I didn’t bake the sculpture yet. It looks like that so far.

After watching a very interresting documentary about hyper realistic artists like Ron Mueck, I wanted to try to make something realistic enough.

after making the basic shape of the hand, I’ve added wrinkles and the veins with a mix of light blue fimo and super sculey.

once the hand was finished, I’ve made a little blue pixy to add a bit more enery and life in the sculpture.

The little blue pixy skin is a mix of super sculpey and blue fimo. the eyes are black fimo with a drop of varnish to give them life.
